YAVUZ SULTAN SELIM BRIDGE / STAY CABLE / ISTANBUL/TURKEY

Freysaş Mission - Stay Cable Works:
On 31 October 2013, Freyssinet International Company ‒ Freysaş Freyssinet Yapı Sistemleri San. A.Ş. joint venture has signed
a contract with Hyundai Engineering & Construction ‒ SK Engineering & Construction JV to supply and install the stay
cables and dampers on the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge.
With its innovative design and 1.408 m long central span, the structure has a 58 m wide deck carrying 2x4 traffic lanes and
two railway lines in the middle. The deck which has a reinforced concrete back span and a metal central span is held up by
a hybrid suspension system comprising:
•176 stay cables, requiring 8.400 tons of steel (1960 Mpa) and made up of parallel strands, the longest of which is 597 m.
The entire system is supported by two A-shape concrete towers approximately 320 m in height. The stay cables were
installed between September 2014 and July 2016.


Description of the Work:
The Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, which was built on the Bosphorus, İstanbul within the Northern Marmara Motorway Project
executed by IC Içtas ‒ Astaldi Consortium, is listed among the most important bridges of the world with its aesthetic and
technical features such as 8 lanes of motorway and 2 lanes of railway being located at the same level.
The bridge of first time’s, the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge is the widest suspension bridge in the world with a width of 59
meters, the longest spanning one that has a rail system on it, with a main span of 1408 meters and with the highest tower
of the world, with a height of more than 322 meters.
With its construction completed between 2013 and 2015, the 3rd Bosphorus Bridge is going to be located in the Odayeri
‒ Paşaköy section of the Northern Marmara Motorway project. The rail system on the bridge is going to transport
passengers from Edirne to İzmit. The rail system is going to be integrated with the Marmaray and the İstanbul Subway
to link Atatürk Airport, Sabiha Gökçen Airport, and the 3rd Airport.
